Borgnine Keeps Pace of Guys Half His Age

Hollywood Exclusive by Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith - Aug 19th, 2009

Ernest Borgnine may be 92 years old, but he’s keeping up a pace that could scare a man half his age.

The “Marty” Oscar winner just wrapped up work on “The Genesis Code,” a big-screen drama with Louise Fletcher and Fred Thompson in Michigan, and he leaves next week for New Orleans to start work on the comedy “Snatched” — his 202nd picture. Yes, we said 202nd.

He’s also been busy this summer with book signings for his recently launched “Ernie, the Autobiography.” “I love being out meeting the people!” he enthuses.

Michigan tax credit courts film industry to lure money, jobs

By Sharon Silke Carty, USA TODAY

DETROIT — In downtrodden Michigan, the hot topics for conversation in the past six months have been such depressing subjects as bailouts and bankruptcy, layoffs and plant closings, even the disappointing Stanley Cup playoff loss by the NHL's Detroit Red Wings.
So it's been a relief lately to have something else for people to buzz about: celebrity sightings.

We're not talking the D-list: Stars have included George Clooney, Drew Barrymore, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood, Edward Norton and Hillary Swank.

The gypsy-like movie industry, which roams from place to place to find the best locations — and best deals — has taken a liking to Michigan in the past two years. That's thanks in part to generous tax incentives that give the entertainment industry a refundable business tax credit of up to 42% for production costs spent in the state.

Film Festivals! The very thought is magical – promising to connect movie lovers to an exciting venue experience and great independent films.

Arts and cultural offerings have been shown to increase a communities' quality of life; arts that reflect a communities values and ideals. The statistics are overwhelming that the most attended – the most profitable – movies that filmmakers’ produce are those that are family oriented.

The Grand Rapids Film Festival was created to:

•Benefit the Filmmaker.
To stimulate and perpetuate the creative talent of aspiring and professional filmmakers, and to give them a venue to express their voice through the cinematic arts. A voice that resonates with the family through films that are inspiring and challenging. We also want to connect them to other filmmakers, publishers and distribution opportunities.

•Benefit the Audience.
Give the viewing audience quality independent movies that are raising the bar. Movies that are message driven and that the family can enjoy and invest in.

•Benefit the Community.
A film festival brings fun, newcomers, dollars, exposure and recognition to Grand Rapids. To continue to elevate Grand Rapids to a proper reflection of who we are – what we can be – in the area of cinematic arts. Also, the film industry is a growing asset for economic development in our state, helping to attract an educated and creative workforce.

•Benefit the Sponsors.
The benefit to sponsors is to be associated with the arts in a highly visible way that also promotes family-minded entertainment options, resulting in both positive economic and social impact.

Family Oriented? Message Driven? What?

In our festival guidelines, we state that we want this film festival to attract international films that are inspiring and challenging and that the family can invest in.

Why? Because the family genre is not just about kids anymore. It’s older teens, parents of children and childless adults. Over the past decade, box-office numbers have proven that it’s the most profitable, the most attended, and the most “up” in production output versus its R-rated counterparts. It’s people who don’t want the excessive Hollywood “gish” that creates a cringe-factor.
